Spending Dollars of People with Disabilities

The disability community is an untapped market of qualified talent with access to:

  • The total after-tax disposable income for working-age people with disabilities is about $490 billion, which is similar to that of other significant market segments, such as African Americans ($501 billion) and Hispanics ($582 billion)

  • Discretionary income for working-age people with disabilities is about $21 billion, which is greater than that of the African American and Hispanic market segments combined.

  • Disposable and discretionary income varies by disability type and by state—information that can help business leaders as they make plans for accessing the disability market.

Employment

  • In 2021, the unemployment rate for persons with a disability was 10.1%, approximately twice as high as those without a disability.

  • Additionally, 29% of workers with a disability were employed part-time, while 16% of individuals without disabilities were employed similarly. In fact, in most developed countries, the unemployment rate for individuals with disabilities who are of working age is at least twice as high as for individuals without disabilities. If workers with disabilities reached the same employment rate as those without a disability, nearly 14 million more individuals would have been employed in 2021.

Education

  • In the year 2022, an estimated 15.9 percent (plus or minus 0.21 percentage points) of non-institutionalized persons aged 21 to 64 years with a disability in the United States have an educational attainment of less than a high school education.

  • In other words, 3,325,200 out of 20,920,400 non-institutionalized persons aged 21 to 64 years with a disability in the United States have an educational attainment of less than a high school education in 2022. The estimates above are based on a sample of 210,386 persons who participated in the 2022 American Community Survey (ACS). (Source www.disabilitystatistics.org)

Why is this important

  • Because as a nation, we cannot afford to leave any population out of the labor market.

  • There are multiple positive economic implications for our economy.

  • When we raise our expectations, we experience positive outcomes, transformation and inclusion that transcend disability.

  • Partnering with the disability community is a win-win which can lead to:
Providing a strong platform for marketing to the disability and allied community supported by, data, evidenced-based research and storytelling.

  • Access to an untapped market for developing, and scaling products for people with disabilities and an aging demographic.
